The Use of Essential Oils For Mild Depression or Anxiety

4/29/2013

Comments

Historically plants have been used for centuries to affect mood or to ease the symptoms of illness.  Last year,  a review a preclinical and clinical studies on the use of citrus (lemon, lime, grapefruit, and orange) was conducted to research the affects of these citrus essential oils when dealing with anxiety or depression (Pimenta, et al, 2012) The naturally occurring anxiolytic substance in the genus citrus was used in conjunction with sedatives, hypnotics, tranquilizers, and anti-epileptics to aid in the reduction of stress and anxiety in psychiatric settings. Psychologists, therapists, or counselors could also use essential oils to complement treatment of mild mood disorders.

What this all means is to the average person is that an individual can take control of minor depression or anxiety with the use of aromatherapy in conjunction with a good holistic therapist who understands the use of essential oils and their applications to clinical work.

As a psychologist I do not advocate the extensive use of psycho-pharmacology to treat mild forms of depression and anxiety. The disclaimer here is if you are suffering from acute depression or anxiety to seek the aid of a professional therapist.

At Herbal Pharming we are dedicated to bringing our customers reliable information on the use of essential oils in all aspects of life and home to bring joy, health, and happiness to everyone.

    Aromatherapist and Psychologist

Have studied essential oils and their historical uses for over 15 years.  Have put my education to work developing all natural products with essential oils for use in personal care and pet care products.  Primary focus is helping others to live chemical free and reduce the number of chemicals in their environment. From time to time I will present current research on the use of essential oils in a psychological clinical setting.
